Premises ID & NAIS Dead in Vermont
Mandatory Premises ID registration and the USDA's proposed National Animal Identification System (NAIS) are dead in Vermont! See this article for more details: In a nutshell, which is where these programs belongs, the Vermont Agency of Agriculture (AoA) has finally heard the enormous protest against the program and said they are letting the proposal for mandatory Premises ID expire and will not share information with the feds thus killing NAIS at the same time. "Secretary of Agriculture Steve Kerr told a crowd of nearly 100 at a Montpelier hearing Thursday that the agency would let its proposed rule that would require those keeping livestock to register with the state to expire." It is unnecessary to violate our rights and privacy in order to control animal disease. The government should focus on education and being polite. The VT AoA is one 800 lb guerilla that just learned it can't sit anywhere it pleases. Cheers! -Walter

That's great news!
Here in Missouri, we recently received letters from the state asking for volunteer registering.
The letter stated that depending on how many people volunteer to register will decide if they will make it mandatory or not.

I wish I could feel confident that the Connecticut River, which is all that stands between me and Vermont animals, would provide some protection. It won't. So when communicable disease breaks out in your state, my animals will be jeopardized.
Nice job, guys.
Personally, I like the idea of not mandating NAIS. I don't mind if people volunteer but mandating it violates peoples rights.
I think NAIS is just another way that the government is trying to control the people.
This doesn't mean that I think farmers should not care for animal health, far from it. There are just things that the government should not need to know.
Bill,
I have always respected you for your stand against the check off so I was surprised by your attack on us who are fighting this monster. (the USDA's NAIS) Have you read the USDA's draft plan for this? Have you seen the many articles in SHEEP Magazine on why this is so bad? What communicable disease are you worried about? If the USDA's NAIS was in effect right now I would be out of business because I lost some sheep awhile ago and have yet to find any trace of them. They have been missing for about 2 months now. Can you pay a $1000.00 fine per day for missing sheep?
This won't stop any disease. Neither will reporting all of the births, deaths, loss of tags, or movement of animals to the USDA or anyone else.
Bill,
If you have to think you have your animals 'jeopardized' for the rest of us to retain our basic Constitutional rights, freedoms and privacy then so be it. The fact is that by Vermont rejecting NAIS and premises ID you and your animals have not been put in any jeopardized at all. Nothing has gotten worse. We were not a threat to you last year. We are not a threat to you now. It is wrong for you to expect me to give up my liberties to calm your foolish fears.
