PA Livestock Auctions - Open to General Public?

PA Livestock Auctions - Open to General Public?
I'm thinking about getting a few goats. Are the Pennsylvania livestock auctions open to the general public? (i.e. Belknap, Belleville, Eighty-four, Greencastle, Indiana, Lancaster, Lebanon Valley, New Holland) I'd hate to drive all the way out there to find out they're only for wholesalers. Thanks. --Lou

Hi! I know that the one Pa livestock auction held in greene county is open to the public, but I would personally avoid them, they are places for farmers to dump off their 'sick' animals. I'd go for a breeder of goats instead of chancing the livestock auctions.

They could be a great investment. Boer goats are good bloodline to start with.

LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES:

I would also go directly to a responsible breeder and owner. ASK FOR REFERENCES of others that have purchased from them.

We are new to the land of goats.

My kids and I have been doing some homeschooling this month at the Livestock Auction house by our home. It has been very interesting, but the animals there are not always in the best of shape.

I'd go visit the goat farmers in your area. It is great to have a "resource" just down the road.

Make sure they are CL and CAE free. We just learned this the hard way.

We are awaiting the results on a CL culture. This may shut down our goat fun before its actually begun. It is so disappointing to be just starting out and to have NOT done enough research to NOT allow this kind of stuff into our barn.

We are disheartened, but waiting for a miracle.

Remember, Some Auctions are slaughter only (For instance, New Holland.) You won't be able to "raise" these. They are for slaughter only.
