Has anyone started their garden yet?
We have already planned out what we are going to plant. We are getting very excited about the fresh home grown vegetables... We have already started some of the seeds in flats in the house. We are doing severial herbs, onions, lettuce, grains, 10 diferent kinds of tomatoes (purple, white, red, yellow, and striped), turnips, radishes, carrots, green beans (green pole and purple pole), corn, cuccumbers, potatoes, watermelons (there are 4 diferant kinds but one of them has a yellow center and one has a white center), melons, and celery. We are thinking about having our own stand this year. I think we will do well with the odd things like purple and white tomatoes, lemon cucumbers, and yellow and white watermelons. We sure are gonna have our work cut out for us with this very large garden! But I am really looking forward to it. This will also be my first year of canning, so that will be an experience!

I hope you do well with the odd vegetables. I have work at farmer's markets and sometimes it is hard to talk customers into different produce. We had pink tomatoes. The only difference is that a pink tomato does not have a red skin. We probably sold 5 red tomatoes to every pink one. People can be picky and set in their ways. They don't buy many yellow tomatoes either.
I don't know where you are. You need to know your anticipated last frost free date. If you have started the melon plants, they could become very viney before you set them out. Remember to harden your plants before you set them out. The plants can also get very stretched in the house if you don't have enough light. I am thinking about starting tomato and pepper plants soon. I am also thinking about starting some flowers as well. We just bought this farm and moved in in November. I am anticipating spring! I planted lots of bulbs last fall and I am ready for some color! (We are in Illinois, very close to the Indiana border) I majored in Horticulture in college, so gardening is more than a hobby to me. I wish you good luck with your gardening and canning. Canning is a hobby of mine as well. Nothing tasted better than something that you have preserved in a jar yourself!
Hey, you two! How about an update on your gardening experiences? It's been a year and I, for one, would like to hear how you made out in the gardening and canning departments! ( I'm a gardener, too!).
