Goats

Two KidsGoats are hardy, resourceful ruminant animals that live and produce for several years when adequately fed. Being ruminants, they convert forages, forbs (weeds) and browse into meat, milk and fiber. Either by artificial or natural selection, certain genotypes produce more effectively in one environment than in others. The environment of temperature and rainfall is not provided by man. Management, however, is. Utilizing feedstuffs that are readily available and providing nutrition for goats that is the least costly is how money is made in a goat operation.

I caught then end of a TV show about goat cheese and goat farming. I also own a small farm but have always planted wheat, soybeans, etc... never delt with any livestock. Anyway, this show pict'd my interest. How many acres do you need to per goat? How much milk do they produce/day? what is involved in making goat cheese? I guess I need to know everything. I have been told that pound per pound they bring more that cows.

Hi, "How many acres do you need to per goat? " There is conflicting information about the number of acres required largely due to the different climatic conditions of where you are and the breed of goat you wish to farm. I go by the thumb rule of 2 goats to the acre. http://home.vicnet.net.au/~yvgoat/index.htm
will give you a basic idea of breeds and care.
"How much milk do they produce/day?" In a herd situation the average is 2 to 3 litres of milk per day. The less number of goats the more milk you get as there is less competition for food.
"what is involved in making goat cheese?" A lot of time, patients and chooks to eat the failures. Most cheesemaking equipment can be found in your own kitchen, providing you only make it for yourself as there are very strict laws for anything to do with milk.
"I have been told that pound per pound they bring more that cows" yes the proportion of milk to body weight is in the goats favour.
Hope this has been a help.

Hi to all,
I have about 50 goats and provide water for them with two large cisterns (they are rather large; about 6' in diameter). I have heard that the young kids can fall in and drown so for now I have a rather crudely constructed "fence" around each one which gives them just enough room to stick their heads in. I was thinking more along the lines of a grid or something that could be placed INSIDE the cistern??? Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks in advance.
