SPINNING OTHER FIBERS

Now that you feel comfortable with your spinning technique you may want to have an adventure with exotic fibers that are sometimes difficult for beginners to master. I began with mohair which was in some ways like the Border Leicester or quarter-blood Corriedale fleeces that I enjoyed so much as a beginner. I would advise adult mohair for beginners rather than fine kid mohair.

After mastering mohair you are ready to try your hand at silk. Silk is a whole new ball game. Silk is a long filament that needs much more twisting than wool, mohair or angora fiber. The same holds true for cotton. Cotton for the most part is a short fiber as is often angora and cashmere. Learning to draft these fibers will require a shorter draft and more twist. Attending a workshop to help you with these fibers is advisable. Being better informed of the differences you will encounter these exciting and interesting fibers which will lessen your frustration when working with them.

Finally, you are ready to blend your colors and fibers. This will initiate your creative talents and from the students I have taught, the product that pleases will differ considerable from individual to individual. Working with fibers has no end and sharing with others will help you to be more creative. Creativity breeds creativity. Have fun spinning and hopefully it will become a satisfying and value-added venture.
