DRAFTING FIBER IN PREPARATION FOR SPINNING

Study drafting. Be patient and realize that treadling your spinning wheel and drafting the fiber makes the yarn. Drafting is the process of taking your rolag or lock of wool and pinch, pull and slide. Pinch the rolag or locks of grease or washed wool with your right hand between hand between your thumb and forefinger. Pull your fiber with your left hand until it is uniform between your right and left hands. Treadle your spinning wheel until the fiber is sufficiently twisted. Then slide your right hand down the fiber until it meets your left hand. Let your spinning wheel draw in the yarn you have twisted. Pinch again at the orifice at that point and pull again. Then slide and let the wheel pull in the yarn to complete. Continue until you have mastered a uniform yarn. Reverse the process if you are left-handed. If your learn to draft with your left hand, when you spin on a Great Wheel you will have formed the habit that is required to spin on these large wheels. The Great Wheel is built to be drafted with the left hand and the wheel turned with the right.

Be good to yourself and your wheel. Don't expect too much in the beginning and remember that spinning will always be a challenge. Oil your wheel frequently, especially where metal and wood conveniently oil your wheel as needed. After several hours of spinning you will begin to have a feel for it. Take breaks often when spinning. Save your first yarn. It is a good measuring stick to check your progress. After about 100 hours of spinning wool, you will be ready to spin other fibers. Also learn to ply your yarn and ply in the opposite direction called "S" or counterclockwise. This helps untwist the often over twisted beginners yarn.
