Will he land in the arms of the way-too-experienced or the way-too-drunk? Or can he find true love where he least expects - from a gorgeous grandmother (Catherine Keener)? When it comes to sex, there's onlyone sure thing - "The 40-Year-Old Virgin". The outrageous comedy hit is now the DVD that makes the pleasure last forever! Amazon.com: Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. --Bret Fetzer Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Very funny anda little twistedSeriously one of the funniest modern comedies of the decade. Nerdy electronic salesman Steve Carol gets hooked up in the mayhem of his debauched workmates. Rating: - Steve Carell is a geniusI have not laughed as much in a movie ! This is a brilliant, very well made movie and exceeded my expectations. I love the interpersonal themes and the 'real' way the actors portrayed themselves. I recommend this movie to anyone with a sense of humor and needs a laugh. Rating: - hilarious movieI am sure the movie description written for the product is better than anything I could ever write, so I will just leave it as this is a good movie that I got a great deal on the Blu-Ray. I will say that sometimes they drag the jokes on WAY too long, but once you get past that is is pretty funny. Rating: - Best of Apatow, and a Classic ComedyBoy was this movie a slap in the cheeck from out of nowhere. Tis' the dawn of improvisational film comedy, and America is embracing it in a big way. One can say that the funniest movies coming out today derive from the cast of this film or are connected to Judd Apatow in some way. When we thought comedy was nearly dead in the film business, Apatow stepped in with a new method of obtaining hilarious memorable stories. 40 year old virgin is his first and best film that displays the enormous talent it takes to be stellar at improv. My favorite comedies became his movies and other related ones as soon as this film came out. 40 Year Old Virgin is the dawn of a new age, and it's still arguably the best of its time. What we all need to recognize is that this film was incredibly lucky to have its cast. Every single person in this film is really funny. The movie is so enduring because it is perfectly casted and brilliantly created. Although there is a lack of script, the improvisation created lines that we all still use to this day. Critics may have bashed this film for targeting younger audiences with a fearless sex comedy, but its really more than that. 40 Year Old Virgin gave everybody a run for their money. I could go on and say all the great things about it, but in all reality I can't find a bad thing about it, so I'll just call it a classic. On Blu-ray we get a sweet load of special features. I'm still protesting the boring Universal menu system and their intolerable U-Control feature, but other than that the segments satisfy me. I was happy to see a lot of outtakes and extended improv scenes. As far as a blu-ray release goes, it was satisfactory, but you may not see much of an amazing transfer. The picture is still a little uncrisped but as a comedy it doesn't have too many standards. If anyone hopes to brandish a collection of the best comedy films, they need this in their collection. Steve Carell is an amazing actor and this is where his career really took off. Not only did he get noticed, but actors like Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Jane Lynch, Jonah Hill, Gerry Bednob, and Elizabeth Banks all took off in a big way after this film. Not only did 40 Year Old Virgin last in the funny part of our brain, but it made history on several fronts. Rating: - Not great conditionIn my opinion, selling a used dvd on Amazon would make someone believe it is in decent condition- why would you sell it otherwise? The condition said "good" and I figured it was just used, but the disc skips in 2 or 3 places. | |
